Coastal Navigation A
This classroom course teaches fundamental paper-pencil navigation techniques critical to safely arrive at your destination along inland lakes. Although electronic navigation is extremely popular, the basic skills are essential, especially if your electronic systems are rendered inoperable. This course will teach:
Basic coastal navigation
Deduced reckoning
ATONS (aids to navigation)
Use of basic navigation tools — parallel rules, divider, hand bearing compass.
Chart basics — chart descriptions and symbols important to coastal navigation.
The perfect course if you plan to venture from your harbor. Essential for those considering Cruising Fundamentals or intermediate an advanced skill development.

Coastal Navigation B — Tides and Currents
This classroom course extends fundamental skills taught in Coastal Navigation A. It prepares you to sail in areas of the world with tides and currents. You’ll learn essential tide and current resources and references for tides and learn critical set and drift calculations and navigational plotting techniques essential to keep you on-course when currents are flowing at their maximum. This course will prepare you for the ASA105 Certification when both A and B components are taken.
Learning Format
4 hour course taught on weekends (8:30-12:30 or 12:30-16:30)
Learning Investment
$220 per person for each part of the course.
Optional ASA 105 Certification: $175
Requires additional 2 hours of on-water and test administration.
Prerequisites
Sailing Fundamentals certification or prior experience in moderate sailing conditions is highly recommended.

Wilmette or Waukegan Harbor.
