Cruising Fundamentals
Description
The course is designed to teach you basic cruising techniques to prepare you for a weekend coastal cruise or short charter. The learning format is taught in a linear fashion.
Course planning and coastal navigation — planning your route.
Boat systems — what you must know about key boat system components, such as engine, fuel, water, electrical, safety, cooking.
Basic knots — additional knots you may use while underway.
Harbor skills — departing and returning to a dock; fueling and fire prevention; wastewater pump-out techniques.
Sailing techniques underway — tacking and gybing in pursuit of your destination, sailing in moderate weather; sail handling and trim.
Anchoring skills — when you’d like to take a break to dine or swim or used to stop the boat in case of challenges.
Additional crew recovery methods and safety skills — looking after crew and prevention of sea sickness and hypothermia treatment.
This is a perfect course for those that will participate in your sailing adventure preparing them to be “able-bodied crew”.
Learning Format
8 hour course taught over two weekend days — 4 hours each day (8:30-14:30 or 15:00-21:00)
8 hour course taught over three weekday nights sessions — 2.5 hours each day (18:00 – 21:00).
Learning Investment
$605 per person.
Optional ASA 103 Certification: $175
Requires additional 4 hours of on-water and test administration.
Prerequisites
Sailing Fundamentals recommended
Not required unless ASA Certification is desired.
